Located at 6° south of the Tropic of Cancer at 63° west and 18° north, the island of Saint Martin - Sint Maarten is located nearly at the extreme north-east of the Caribbean Archipelago. A hinge between the Lesser and Greater Antilles, the island lies between the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea.
With a total area of approx. 90 square kilometers, the island of St. Martin - St. Maarten, also called "Friendly Island" or "SXM" (its IATA code) measures 15 km at its greatest length and 13 km at its widest point. It lies on a central position in the heart of the Caribbean Sea, midway between Puerto Rico and Guadeloupe and is the nearest French territory from the American coast.
The island of St. Martin - St. Maarten is the smallest territory in the world divided into two independent nations : the French territory of Saint Martin and the Dutch territory of Sint Maarten. No physical boundary exists.
